Taking the Guess Work out of the learning

It has been my experience that simply sending a student to read chapters 3 and 4 in the textbook leaves the student on his/her own to attain knowledge. Do you know of any better way to immerse students in a learning environment where knowledge attainment is more immersive?

I've used several different techniques in my class during the class time to help students dig into the text in GenEd classes:

* Divide the reading material and the students into sections. Student #1 reads section #1 and then presents it to the class. Every reads for 10 minutes and then presents information for 5 minutes.

* Rather than have everyone present their sections to the entire class, I have often created groups of 4. Each student reads and presents his section to his group only.

* Students have to pick out 1 or 2 questions in the reading assignment to be used in a review game.

* Students have to think of a "Stump the Teacher" question from the material.
