Sounds like you are doing a great job, Tina. Your staff knows what they are doing. And it seems like you have good relationships with the folks in your other departments. Career services has to work hand-in-hand with admissions. Looks like it is working at your school. Getting a dialogue going with the student or prospective student impacts on retention, placement, student satisfaction, and admissions. Thanks, Susan
Great Tina. We also believe that placement activities have to start right along with the first day of class or before. And needs to be ongoing. We find that there are students who make full use of career services and those who don't have a clue about what it is all about. For those it's important to contact them regularly until they understand what you offer and it's benefits. Sometimes their reluctance is that they are not thinking ahead to graduation day. Thanks, Susan

Hi Cynthia Student services encompass a lot and all impacts on student success. Here are some examples: Orientation - a time for students to learn about the school, study skills, meet students and staff, etc. Academic assistance - has many forms from teacher interaction to others identifying areas where student needs help and providing it within the school or from outside resources. Library - a media center that is useful for students. Graduation - an exciting event for students to look forward to and a celebration. Placement - staff that will assist with development employment skills and eventually with seeking… >>>

HI Douglas, You certainly have quite a challenge. Five year plans always need revisiting so it sounds like a wise choice to start with that. Actually we find that it's the planning process that is really important. If you involve the right representatives of the school you'll get a lot of great ideas. And when a plan is in place you can get feedback as to how sound it is. The right plan identifies opportunities, obstacles, tasks, timelines, deadlines, and budget. Ideally the plan is well researched with backup information so that any changes can be easily checked out. Good… >>>

We agree, Mark. We also think that the job description has to outline expectations in terms of meeting goals and putting in creative ways to save money, streamline the job, and create something new to make a difference. We don't want pencil pushers. We want employees who will be a team to bring our schools to the next levels. Thanks, Susan
Great Mark. Student services is definitely a campus state of mind. It starts from the top by emphasizing that everyone's main job on campus is to address the students' needs as soon as possible. Large and successful companies know this because many have great customer care programs in place. This ensures customer satisfaction, retention, and great referrals. And you learn a lot from customer complaints. From the minute a prospective student places a call or emails a request that person must feel that the campus is 100% student oriented. Thanks, Susan
Great outline re budget, Mark. Thanks. There also needs to be a contingency amount of about 20%. And most important, each department head needs to know his/her budget and be accountable for it. That means ideally monthly reports and updates about how things are going and rewards for meeting budgets and ways to put new plans in place when budgets aren't met. Everyone on staff has to be accountable and know that their efforts affect the bottom line. And ideally that they are earning their salaries. Thanks, Susan

So well said, Mark. A plan shows that we have choices and options. Sometimes we forget that. Sometimes we think we are stuck with the ways things are going and forget that we can make changes. Sometimes strategies don't work. A plan helps to evaluate whether the concept is worthy and just needs to be handled better or really needs to be scrapped. We work with school owners who have great programs but enrollment is off. They want to scrap the program. Instead they might want to determine if they are running after the wrong market. They need to figure… >>>

Very well stated, Mark. A plan is a working document. It promotes brain storming for new ideas and solutions. It identifies obstacles, challenges, and opportunities. A plan needs to be evaluated constantly so changes can be made. A plan helps list tasks, timelines, and deadlines. It's the basis for creating budgets, pro formas, marketing, and business plans. Sometimes a plan is set in stone for a long time. Some plans are good only until lunch! It's the process and concept of having a plan that's important. Thanks, Susan
WOW Cristelyn - you have given us the formula for success. Be passionate about what you do and place at least 5 big request calls a day. Thanks
