There are a variety of technology tools to use when teaching online.  These technology tools assist in the teaching process and organization of the course and course content.  A few technology tools include (in alphabetical order): Blogs, Digital Portfolios, Learning Management Systems (LMS), Podcasting, Screen Capture Programs, Virtual Classrooms, and Wikis.

The most important thing, and many times the most difficult thing for the instructors, is to determine which technology tool is the appropriate technology to use in an online course.  Blogs, short for Weblogs, are typically used as online journals and reflections.  Digital Portfolios or e-Portfolios allow students to create an… >>>

John,

Happy to help.  It takes some time and experience (+ trial and error) to develop rules like this that work for you.  It's a personal thing - as is teaching - but I'm glad these helped you and your friend.  Thanks!

George, Thanks you for providing input to several of these forums. I know others will benefit from your input. You are right in that feedback should help students improve. Assessment should not be something we do to our students, but with our students. When you get the opportunity, include self- and peer evaluation as well. As you noted, individualized assessment is important. And, the point about varying your feedback is great too. "That was good!" ;-) Thank you.
George, You hit on three very important words in your response immediately: prompt, rubrics, and specific. With appropriate rubrics, it is easy also to provide consistent feedback. You are correct in that the rubric must be easy to understand from the student's point of view, yet comprehensive enough to be a substantial grading too. I also put my learning objectives in the rubric so that students can see how the objectives of the course relate to specific assignments/projects. Thanks for your input.

George, Again, nice job. You are thinking about the variety of students you may be teaching. They come to the online classroom (or any classroom) with different experiences, learning abilities, needs, interests, etc. As you have noted, diversity is more than gender and race. Being that goal driven person, you can help your students excel and move forward no matter where they are "coming from." Nice job. Thanks.

George, Awesome! Thank you for your detailed information in this forum. Sounds like you are doing a great job in providing students with a variety of examples in multisensory ways. This is important with the varietly of learners you are teaching online. The use of different technologies also makes the class more interesting and you are hitting on the word "edutainment." Entertaining education. Nice job. Thank you.

Ana, Thanks for you input. You are correct in making sure the content and objectives match. This is essential. Making the information clear is also essential. This leads to good communicaion, whether through email, the syllabus, discussion board, etc. with students. Nice job.

Darcy, Thanks for your input. You are right on target with your comments. Your presence online influences everything else you have discussed. Your presence influences communication as well. Thanks again.

Beth, It's awesome that you are using rubrics and encouraging the students to review them so that they know what is expected. Using the rubrics also helps you (as you know) be consistent in your feedback. Students at times do not review the rubrics to begin with, but typically after the first assignment is graded, they learn quickly how helpful the rubric is. It's important not to put informaiton in the rubric that tells them exactly what to do, but the standards with which you will hold them accountable. For example, if they are writing a report or analysis of… >>>

Renae,

My pleasure.  The more we share, the more we can learn from each other an not have to go through the experience of becoming and 24-7 instructor and then trying to figure out how to NOT do that the next time.  As you get more experience, please continue to share your ideas and keep being SMART!  ;-)  Happy teaching.
