I am thrilled you are learning so much in the online courses.  Whenever you can learn something and then immediately implement it into your own classroom, that's fantastic.  Engaging students is essential in teaching face-to-face (F2F) and online and many times this involves using discussion board effectively. I look forward to seeing your posts about future courses as well.

Kristin, Thank you for your well thought out and organized response to this forum question. What you said falls right along the lines of what good teaching is: Tell them (the students) what you're going to teach them. Teach them (mostly with student-centered activities). Tell them what you just taught them. This incorporates your organized course content, objectives, teaching in a variety of ways, feedback, etc. Nice job.

Joseph, Great. I'm glad you can utilize what you are learning in this course. Let us know how it works out. Thank you.
Joseph, The students do provide great feedback so that instructors can improve the course the next time it is taught. It's also helpful to ask for that feedback throughout the course and not just at the end of the course. Thanks for your input.

Lawrence, Thank you for your organized and complete response. Communication and a high level of design are important. I am also glad you brought up the point about the approval of the modules and/or syllabus. Many schools develop a consistent format across the curriculuma and this is an important aspect. I do not believe this have been brought up before. Thank you.
Scott, Good point. Thre are a variety of technology skills an instructor may need. It's important to assess your own skills as an instructor and know what the students may have difficulties with so you can communicate to alleviate issues that may arise. It's good to be proactive. Nice job.

Scott, You are right that communicating to help htem learn is an important concept of the rubric. Rubrics also help them understand what is expected and how they will be assessed. They also help reduce the number of questions instructors get from questions such as "Why did I get a B?" or "Why did you take off 10 points." Thanks!

There are many baby boomers that have technical skills. All generations may have some level of technical skill, it's "what type of technical skill." However, the millennials and the next generation have even more.

Communication is very important in an online environment. Meeting with students synchronously is effective for answering questions that several students may have. Another effective technique is to have online office hours where you can chat with students individually or use software that allows the use of Web cameras so that you can see and talk with students individually. When you have online office hours, students can come to you virtually. These are excellent venues for students to come to the instructor with questions. Remember, however, that not all communication is verbal. Written communication is also essential. Therefore, your syllabus must… >>>

Dalene, You are right on with positive, specific and motivating. Being positive many times is difficult, but necessary. Being specific and motivating will help students see their errors, but more importantly your feedback will help them understand why it is incorrect. Understanding the "why" will help them improve on future assignments. Nice job!
