Which Technology Tool to Use When Teaching Online

There are a variety of technology tools to use when teaching online.  These technology tools assist in the teaching process and organization of the course and course content.  A few technology tools include (in alphabetical order): Blogs, Digital Portfolios, Learning Management Systems (LMS), Podcasting, Screen Capture Programs, Virtual Classrooms, and Wikis.

The most important thing, and many times the most difficult thing for the instructors, is to determine which technology tool is the appropriate technology to use in an online course.  Blogs, short for Weblogs, are typically used as online journals and reflections.  Digital Portfolios or e-Portfolios allow students to create an online resume or develop a project in an electronic format.  A LMS is a system like Blackboard or other system that allows the instructor to provide content and supporting documentation online as well as allow for assignment submisson and grading online in a centralized location.  The content may include text, images and media such as videos.

Podcasting allows the instructor to provide recorded lectures or other materials in a format students can watch and listen to on a media player (such as an iPod) or via the Internet.  Screen Capture Programs allow the instructor to record their voice (and talking head with the use of a Web camera) and whatever they are doing on the computer screen to produce learning materials/tutorials for student viewing.  Virtual Classrooms (VC) are  synchronous classrooms in which students and the instructor can meet at the same time and also record the VCs for future viewing.  Wikis are simply Web pages in which groups of students or all students can edit the Web page. These edits can be tracked so that the instructor can view and give appropriate credit.

When teaching online, it is important to think about the assignment/project, learning outcomes, what needs to be completed and the appropriate technology to meet these needs.  It takes some time, along with trial and error, to find the right fit.
