Esther, These are definitely three important things to know. Knowing where the students are "coming from" and how they learn are essential in providing content to them in a meaningful way. Time committments and workloads are important to keep in check as well. Thanks for your input.

Jennifer, Thanks for your input. Developing a specific approach is essential in an online course. You have noted that communication is a key element. You communicate through your syllabus with your course expectations and outcomes. You communicate when you provide any information about assignments/projects, etc. Keep up the good communication!
Jennifer, I agree. The more feedback you get from a variety of sources, the better. I'm glad you are using rubrics and incorporating the course objectives within them. This is very helpful to students. When you do your informal interviews, what do you ask the students? Thank you.
Jennifer, You are absolutely correct in that the feedback you give should enhance the students' learning. Using rubrics with objectives within the rubric will help you be consistent in your grading and help students understand why they are doing what they are doing. Nice job.

Peter, I like the way you are getting feedback from your students. About three times each semester I ask my students what they want me to stop doing, what they want me to start doing and what they want me to continue to do. Stop, Start, Continue. This is a great way to understand the online structure/class from their point of view and understand what you are doing well and what you can improve upon. It seems that you have a good communication plan as well. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

Online instructors must determine whether to use synchronous or asynchronous learning environments or whether to blend the two.  Whether using synchronous or asynchronous methods, guidelines must be developed.  These guidelines must include instructor and student guidelines.  These guidelines must be communicated up front to students so that each student understands the guidelines and any necessary processes involved.

These guidelines will enhance the communication process and outline expectations for everyone involved.  These guidelines should also include how students will be assessed for participation and other aspects of the online classroom.  No matter which method of delivery, students should be provided with… >>>

Julie, I'm thrilled you noted the use of the rubric. It's essential to use them to help students understand the expectations and to help you be consistent in your evaluation. I love also the focus on student success. Thanks for your input.

Julie, You bring good information to this forum. Thanks for sharing. It is essential to develop skill in providing real, meaningful feedback to students in a way to engage them in their own learning. This also helps students want to learn more about the subject. Thanks!
Donna, You are correct. . .not one thing covers everything. The more feedback you can get in a variety of ways, the better. Pretests let you konw where your students are when you begin the class and the post-test can tell you how far they have come. Thanks for your input.
John, Thanks for your input. You sum your thoughts up very succinctly. I likve that you use words such as "student body" instead of just your studeents. It seems to me as though the student body as the "whole package." There are many things to consider when you look at teaching at that level. Nice job.
