Gail, You bring up a good point. Generation is a relative term. There are also people who are "border line" in one generation or another and have characteristics of both. It's important to think about students' characteristics and learning no matter what their age. And, you are right that students need to be ready to learn. Nice job.

Mernoush, You are right. Rubrics help the instructor in many ways. However, they help the students as well. They serve as guidelines for their work and help explain expectations. It is important to place objectives in the rubric so students understand why they are doing what they are doing. Thanks again.
Mernoush, You have been consistent in mentioning tone in your forum feedback. Thanks for keeping this important point in the conversation for everyone.
Mernoush, Thanks for your organized thoughts. Policy is important and must be looked at carefully. Being prompt and positive in your communication is also key. Nice job.

Samuel, Thanks for your input again through this forum. You have brought several key components of feedback up for discussion. Feedback must be communicated with students in a manner they understand. This can be done in a variety of ways. Starting with something positive sets the tone for the feedback. Connecting the feedback to the objectives helps the students understand why they are doing what they are doing and how well they are achieving in the class. This can be done easily by including objectives directly into the rubrics you use. Again, nice job and thanks for your input. It… >>>

Samuel, You are right on target. I'm thrilled you get the "with our students" portion of assessment. Various assessments not only help instructors understand how the students are performing and what they understand or don't understand, but they help the students understand what they need to do to improve. Thanks for your input.

Julie, Thanks for your input through this forum. You are right and bring up some good points. Thinking through what the course outcomes should be is the first step. And, yes, presenting information in a variety of ways so that students can learn in the way they learn best. The course revision is a continuous process. Asking students for feedback in formative and summative ways helps you do that. Thanks again.

When teaching online, it is beneficial to provide information in your syllabus to help students become aware of course expectations for good online citizenship.  There are a variety of elements involved in good online citizenship.  Good online citizenship information may include specifics about plagiarism including a definition and penalties.  Plagiarism in the online classroom has evolved to include cyber-plagiarism as well.  Plagiarism itself is basically using someone else’s work as your own without providing any credit to the other person.  Cyber-plagiarism includes obtaining ideas from the Internet and using it without proper referencing.  It also includes downloading research papers, journal… >>>

Krystal, Good input. Pre- and post-tests can tell us all a lot. As instructors/facilitators we want to determine if our students are learning and if not, what we need to do to improve the learning process. Also, pre-tests are helpful as a diagnostic test to see what the students already know. I have used pre-tests to determine how quickly I can cover material or how slowly I may need to explore new content. Thanks!
