Discussion Comment

Some adult learners have more motivation and engaging in the class discussion. However, it is very challenging to moderate some who feel that life experiences provided them a sense of being a co-moderator of the class. The challenge is when they continue to interrupt the lecture with every lif story they see fits the discussion. I allow students to relate the topic being discussed with their life experience as long as I can leave enough time to discuss the weekly topics.

I learned al lot in this class. The key is encouraging the students by allowing them to integrate their experiential knowledge with the content of the course. In this way, it increase theri retention of the cours content. It also allows the student to build up confidence when educators give them immediate feedback. My action plan is to learn more about strategies in allowing the students to do this without affecting the course discussion time.

I remember when I first went to the front of the classroom to teach my first own class and I remember feeling comfortable. I believe that some of the qualities mentioned in this class and the other classes I took was already in me. I observed an instructor last term and I saw the disadvantage of an instructor who was concerned about being a "Buddy" to the students. One student actually screamed at the instructor and the behavior was never addressed. After, I was given my own classes to teach and I chose to handle my class differently; rules and regulations clearly stated during the first class session, syllabus discussed; consequences for late work, tardiness, interruption of lecture, and disrespectful behaviors well also discussed. We were taught as nurses to treat our pateint as we would like to be treated or how we would like for our loved ones to be cared for. Having been a student for so many years, I motivate my students to achieve their goal and develop a good study habits. This segment have validated my knowledge of the advantages of using the syllabus as a teaching map.
