I've learned how important it is to have consistency across course modules. Also, if you too much information in one module, you can use chuncking to combine some information.

 

Some of my best practices for online teaching include: 

1) Getting to know my students through the Introduction Discussion Board. I read their bios and comment on them, showing commonalities whenever possible.

2) Contacting my students early in the first week with a welcome message.

3) Responding quickly to student's questions, wether they email me, call me, or text me.

4) Grading promptly and providing detailed, personal feedback.

In an online environment, procrastination can happen more frequently, just for the sheer fact that students are not expected to show up at class at a certain time and they don't necessarily feel the pressure of knowing their instructor and fellow students face to face. I also learned that it's import to know your university's polices around dispute resolution and to document everything. 

One of the primary ways to engage students in an online learning environment is to help keep the discussion board active and engaging. If the conversation stalls in any way, it's important to add new content to the conversation and invite students to participate!

 

A great way to project your presence is to let your students know about your credentials, but also let them know about some things related to your career where you have made a difference in the lives of others. This can go a long way to humanize you to your students.

 

The online environment has come a long way in the years that I've been teaching. There are so many tools that are available to us as instructors, including the CMS and the ability to have live video lectures. In addition to knowing your CMS and the online tools that are available, it is also import to know the deadlines that you, as an instructor, are responsible for.
