About me

My name is Alverine Rawlins Kan or Allie/Al for short.  I possess a master’s Degree in Business Administration and I am attached to one of the  high schools in the territory of the United States Virgin Islands. In today’s world, students are exposed to a wealth of information on the internet, and versatile with the computer at a very young age.  For instructors, the traditional ways of teaching are not very effective as before, and teaching is becoming more and more demanding, as  we try to incorporate and utilize different methods of teaching to meet the technological, general needs and learning styles of this generation.  I am a business teacher and so my focus spans across math, communication and technology.  Each day I am charged with the responsibility to ensure that my teaching strategies are of such that no student is left behind, and that each of those students regardless of their background, strengths, deficiencies  are able to participate, learn, and contribute to the learning process.

In lieu of the above, I chose this course to find additional ways of engaging my students, especially those who may struggle with some form of deficiency in learning.  At times I have to spend a lot of time preparing effective lesson plans to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills required for them to function in a very competitive world.  As business teachers, we try to go above and beyond to make these students feel included in the learning equation. I am also affiliated with the Stem Institute and NAF Academy, where our goal is to train and prepare students to pursue studies in Technology, Math and Engineering, ensuing that they are compatible with other young people to take up jobs in these areas, as there is a high demand for them.

The attribute of introspective, integrating skilled questioning in the classroom, using intuition and encouraging students who are doubtful about doing something, corroborate the fact that effective learning goes beyond simply delivering content. It involves creating an environment where students feel valued, supported and motivated to learn.  Incorporating these skills lead to a more energetic, and receptive classroom, nurturing a classroom of inquiry and collaboration

I was particularly drawn to the statement' Highly effective instructors know that they are not teaching one class of 20 students; they are teaching 20 classes with one student in each.' This reinforces the importance of differentiated instructions and the detection that each student has unique needs, learning styles and backgrounds. For example, some students may learn best through visual aid, while others may prefer hands on activities or auditory instruction.  An effective instructor identifies these differences and adjusts their teaching strategies accordingly. At the beginning of the course, I will distribute surveys to gather information about students' interests, learning… >>>

Interesting question, from my experience especially if they are enrolled within a class with other students, it's a difficult task. You have to be dedicated, extremely caring, well organized, your instructions should be of such that students are well engaged, lots of hands-on activities, especially for the ADHD students. It also requires a lot of monitoring, and one and one basis with these students. Meanwhile, other students may require your assistance, so somewhere along the line a few students can become short changed. I believe to a certain extent that it may be better for them to be taught separately,… >>>

Implementing the 'Wax on Wax off' strategy can be very effective in the classroom especially for students who lack certain learning skills. Introducing the basic/ new skills/ easier task that doesn't include much difficulty provides comfortability, confidence to move to the next level. Clear instructions are also very important in order to achieve goals for students and allowing them to perform the tasks multiple times enable students to master the concepts and skills, build their self-esteem to   move on to more difficult learning skills.  This strategy will be very instrumental in teaching math concepts.  A large segment of the student… >>>

ALVERINE RAWLINS KAN 109 CAREER DEVELOPMENT CURRICULUM

Essential questions for a career development curriculum should foster self-reflection, exploration of career paths, and understanding of the skills and knowledge needed for success. These questions should be open-ended and promote critical thinking about personal strengths, interests, and how they align with various career options. They should also address the changing nature of work, the importance of adaptability, and the development of essential career management skills.

Essential questions, which are open-ended, thought-provoking, and spark deeper thinking, can be effectively applied in career planning by helping students explore their interests, values, skills, and goals,… >>>

The Initial stage of Academic and Career Planning begins with students discovering their interest and strengths, and then guide them through career exploration and planning with constant monitoring throughout middle school and high school to restructure plans as needed.  Students minds develop and mature as they receive additional knowledge, network with different individuals and are exposed to real world applications, thus their interests may change and their strengths empowered, thus I support the idea of regular check-ins to ensure that students career planning is alignment with their current strengths and interests.

Factors like gender identity, race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family, geography, ability, personality, and opportunity play, to varying degrees, a part in the development of one’s career path.  This makes the journey through the five stages of career development is an extremely personal and private involvement for each individual.  Becoming intimately familiar with these stages provide a roadmap for identifying the difficulties of one’s career, acquainting oneself with more informed decisions, achieve better preparation for future challenges, and strategies for success.  Identifying where you are in your career journey can inspire you to take charge of your professional development, seek… >>>

Google space offers so much opportunities for students to collaborate and share information especially when students are working on projects.  The team of students can keep track of what their peers are doing, team members can also provide comments or suggestions  on group members contribution.  Teachers can also monitor students work and can guide students in terms of whether they are on the right track or topic. Students can also ask questions for clarification. Moreover, teachers can also use it to share assignments and provide submission dates.  I am definitely going to try Zoho Notebook and Slide Share as they… >>>

AI platforms are becoming extremely popular and teachers are allowing students to utilize it to create documents. One of the issues that  I am experiencing with my students is plagiarism, students no longer want to brainstorm ideas and then utilize the AI platform for additional information or development.  One of the strategies that caught my eyes while reviewing the course is encouraging students to brainstorm ideas, and then use the AI (prezi AI) to enhance the document. For example when students are preparing resumes/letters, they can create a  skeleton resume and then transfer it to the AI platform for enhancement. … >>>

Comment on Aidan McFall's:

Defining terms is important, as it enables students to understand and to practice communicating  the terms relating to the job especially in the field of technology. This also makes conversations more fluent and it helps to expedite activities..  It also makes  it easier to understand information and carry out responsibilities, especially when they enter the workforce.  Additionally, employers, supervisors feel more comfortable when employees utilise the language pertaining to the job, management feels more confident when designating positions. Individuals can also come across  as being knowlegeable and well informed
