Activity

Universal Design (UD), coined by Ron MaceIn, an architect in the mid-1980s.  This is a process of creating buildings, structures, environments, products, and services that are usable by the broadest range of people possible, furthering the concept of no need for adaptation or specialized design.

I can see this on campus, at the hotel, and at most of the shopping areas, for example, ramps, well-placed banisters, elevators, and closed caption (CC) on most modern movies and TV shows.

VSOC (VetSuccess on Campus), amongst other things, will provide help to address problems that may interfere with education and facilitate access to health services.

DS (Campus Disability Services), when registered with, the student veteran can receive documented accommodation, which can include extended time for tests and assignments or a quiet testing environment.

Student Affairs/Veteran Affairs Office. posts as a central point of contact for support services and information about campus-specific resources for student veterans.

Asperger's Syndrome is a form of autism that presents unique challenges mainly in social interaction, communication, and organization. The student may struggle with nonverbal cues, handling distractions, abstract thinking, sarcasm, humor, and planning. Strategies used by teachers or instructors include: incorporating structure and routine, using visual aids, communicating clearly and directly, providing positive reinforcement, incorporating special interests, creating a supportive environment, and promoting understanding.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt quoted, "We know that equality of individual ability has never existed and never will, but we do insist that equality of opportunity still must be sought."

It took 50 years for the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) under President George H. Bush, July 26, 1990, who had echoed a similar sentiment: "Together, we must remove the physical barriers we have created and the social barriers that we have accepted."
