About me

I went back to school in my late 30's to earn a Masters in Administration with an emphasis in Leadership. It is my belief that education helps in the advancement of careers. My job allows me to be able to help those who invest in their education.

I am a Director of Admissions for a certification-prep college located in Arizona. We offer IT and Project Manangement training to assist our students in obtaining their certifications &/or credential.

Ester,

What did you take away from this class? Where would you go when things are slow? What resources are you referring too?

Oscar,

In my experience (8 years of college admissions) the majority of applicants will be concerned about the cost of school. What I would suggest is a good conversation with potential enrollees to determine what there financial situation is. When you understand their situation, you'll be better able to refer them to the appropriate party. I work for a school that does not offer title IV funding. We rely on students seeing the value in their training and many self pay or seek grants to cover the cost of the school. If your school offers Title IV funding then you… >>>

I recently have been hired on to turn around an underperforming admissions team. My task involves training and developing a small team increase daily activites to drive the overall success of the organization. I've noticed poor work habits and intend on addressing them. I conduct weekly Employee Development Meetings and provide feedback and we work on goal setting. If employees aren't progressing then they will have to be placed on a Performance Improvement Plan (with HR's approval) and "get with the program". Get on the train, or get off.

Charlethia,

Did you take this course to have a better understanding of how to work with your manager/director?

How did your interaction with others change based on what you learned in this program? Do you have examples you are willing to share?

You first posted this over 1 year ago. I'm curious to how things have changed for you since first enrolling in the class. Have you had to hire/fire any employees in that timeframe? If so, what from this class helped you?

Jeanie,

It seems I'm a bit late to this discussion. After reading this thread, my thought is that your Director's dismissal of prospects asking the question about pay seems a bit premature. Having recently been on the market for a new position, a job seeker is over-whelmed with pre-screening job descriptions and filling out job applications. One of the best pre-screening tools I found was to search for jobs that offered salaries similar to the one I had been earning. It's upsetting to hear that hiring authorities are choosing not to consider applicants for asking a valid question.
