To improve retention rates, schools should consistently focus on effective admissions processes, well planned and engaging orientations, strong mentoring, student involvement, memorable graduation ceremonies, and effective job placement support.

Job placement can involve students throughout their entire program, starting as early as Admissions. Introducing career preparation early can help students stay motivated because they can see how their education connects to their future career. Employment skills can be practiced throughout the program, giving students opportunities to build confidence, prepare for interviews, create resumes, and understand what to expect when entering the field.

This can also support retention by helping students… >>>

Students who are engaged and build connections with school staff, faculty, or other students may feel more supported and develop a stronger sense of community. Creating opportunities for interaction can help students take small steps toward building connections and friendships, especially for students who may have difficulty approaching others or who feel isolated.

Creating a memorable graduation experience can also strengthen their connection with the school and encourage them to stay connected after graduation, whether by returning to share their experience or recommending the school to others.

Mentoring can play an important role in student retention and can be either formal or informal. Students may be more open, engaged, and willing to communicate when they see the school and its staff as caring and supportive rather than unsupportive.

Creating an environment where students feel comfortable sharing their concerns and challenges can make a meaningful difference. By welcoming students to talk about what they may be facing and encouraging them to ask for help, we can address issues before they become overwhelming. This gives students an opportunity to receive the support they need instead of feeling that withdrawing… >>>

Building a foundation of encouragement, trust, and a safe space helps students feel less stressed about handling personal matters alone. This makes them more likely to share their thoughts and concerns, fostering stronger bonds and reducing the likelihood of withdrawal.

Students need to feel that they can trust staff, and staff must stay attentive to any signs of doubt or emerging issues. By doing so, advisors can build meaningful relationships where students feel safe sharing their thoughts and problems, allowing support to be offered in a timely and flexible way.

As staff, it’s important to build committed one-on-one relationships with students to recognize shifts in their stressors and guide them in decision-making, while remembering why they began their journey. All students, regardless of academic standing, benefit from timely support and a safe space where they feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Retention is everyone’s responsibility, and as a team we must consistently support our students; whether they are thriving or facing challenges.
