If I am not able to make a face to face conversion, I feel it is important to call the student so we can talk about the pro and cons of staying in the program.  I offer help to help them catch up, we may talk about personal issues that they feel like they can talk to me since I am not in their class all the time. Learning both synchronous and asychronous discussions makes it clearer to me.  We use more asychronous discussions here but there could be a time when synchronous could be an option.

I find that I have to respond as an individual one on one and have discussions with my students close to the week that is ending. 

In the online enviroment, students can learn at a time that works for them. It is hard to help a student who has a crisis in the middle of the night. Have a tech issue can be very frustrating for the students. I have found that the students believe we should be available 24/7. I have instructors that go to bed at 2100. For those students I usually let them know that I am up until 2230 so they can contact me. Making sure I am up to date on online programs helps me to work with students when off… >>>

Compliance to me is following the rules and regulations from the school and from regulations (State, Federal, Practice approving boards). By being compliant lets me know what I can and cannot do. This prevents gray areas where different people have different ideas on what is the correct practice or procedure. By following them ourselves, we emulate to the students that these are important, and we do not break the rules, we must color inside this box.
