THe most valuable things that I learned from ED110 is the importance of to-do lists and defining personal vs. professional stress.  To-do lists have always helped me before, and I got some valuable advice on how to make then even more effective.  For defining the different types of stress, I think now more than ever that it's so important to keep your personal and professional lives separate.  When the two merge together, it can create even more stress.  I was glad to gain advice on how to handle it better, and I will be sure to practice these tipes in… >>>

I just completed the course, "ED106:  Enhancing Student Learning."  The most valuable thing I learned was how to properly address students that have learning disabilities, and how to encourage them to be successful.  I can actually apply many of the concepts discussed in this course.  For example, I will work on going to my peers for help whenever I am in a situation of monitoring students that I think I will have trouble handling myself.  This is a big deal for me, because I can be bad about asking others for help; I always try to work through it on… >>>

Soft skills are more important than any technical skill we can ever teach a student.  However, something that is just as important as that is the specific skill of managing one's emotions.  While this course gave me a lot of valuable information about soft skills, I would have liked to have seen more on specifically managing emotions.  It takes a lot more than just "counting to 10" when you feel your temper is about to explode.  Most of all, managing emotions is something that can be applied not just in the classroom, but in everyday life.  I would love to… >>>

There are so many illnesses that are exacerbated by stress.  Isn't it interesting that we are the richest country in the world but that not everyone takes the extra step to get the help they need?  I am glad that you were proactive and were able to recognize that you needed help.  It's people like you that tend to make the most effective instructors and hold our students' best interests at heart.  Students will learn by your example.

I found a lot of useful information in this course about soft skills.  Soft skills are a vital coponent that should be a part of all instructors' personalities.  However, the topic within the course that I was most interested in was "Managing Emotions" under the heading about Emotional Intelligence.  I tend to get very sensitive and frustrated about  some things--especially interpersonal communication.  So I would have liked to see more advice about this topic.  Better yet--I think an online course about Emotional Intelligence by itself would be very helpful.  Not just for me, but for a lot of people that… >>>

Managing emotions is a fine art that very few people have mastered. I am asking for advice on the following: Let's say you sit in an area at the office where you are surrounded by many employees because of lack of space. So therefore you are constantly hearing other people's conversations, and a lot of them are not appropriate. Specifically, you hear others talk trash about other employees, the school as an organization and even students. Let's say you have given suggestions on handle to handle these feelings on many occasions, but they never seem to take your advice--they just… >>>

Like I said, the one thing that I did get out of this course was that it refreshed me on general policies and procedures.  If this course was indeed intended for newer instructors, that should have been made more clear within the course description.

The most that I got out of this course is that it refreshed my memory on general policies when starting to teach a new class.  Other than that, I honestly did not get that much out of it.  As an instructor, we all need to understand the importance of setting an example and proper preparation.  I would have benefitted more if this course had introduced newer techniques on classroom management and preparation that I had never heard of before.  I already know how to develop a lesson plan, course syllabus, etc.  Like any other student, I needed something new and… >>>

What techniques have any of you used to stay consistent with policies, yet keep the class enjoyable and fun while covering the material needed? How do you find the "happy medium?"

When I first started teaching, a supervisor told me this theory that I could present to the students. "Think of me as your employer and your grade is your paycheck." By setting clear expectations, guidelines, and policies, the students will develop the understanding that everything they do is a reflection of how they will be once they get out in the workplace. If a student's goal is to get an A, they will only earn it if they communicate well, study appropriately, and communicate any concerns they have along the way in a professional manner. This is what an employer… >>>
