Importance of following up with absent students

Many students who aren't earning a passing grade will often times just quit coming to class, and give up. I always call my students and encourage them to come to class, get tutoring, and stick with it. So many of my students do not have a good support group outside of the school, and without instructor encouragement, tend to feel inadequate. Even if my efforts inspire just one student to keep coming to class, it is absolutely worth it.

I always make an effort to try to reach out to the students. I will email them and try and contact them if they do not

return to class.

I have found that  if I see a student has poor attendance this in itself will lead to failure. I try  to e-mail, and/or call the student . This personal  touch has prevented a possible drop-out from happening.

As I am beginning my career as an instructor, reaching out to struggling students will be very important to me. In my experiences as a student, I may have been more motivated had my instructors as least noticed I was struggling.

Retention is an intergral part of working for the For Profit organizational sector of Higher Edcuation.  You will not save every student but yes, if one is saved then all of the effort is well worth it.  Some strategies I have found benficial is to make sure to set standards on day 1.  If students fully understand the expectations then they are likely to abide by them.  For those who still do not or cannot follow the expectation, as we all have found to be true, life's circumstances can often get in the way, communication is key.  I allow my students to text me, email me, Facebook me, and so on.  There is always a way for the student to reach out to me.  I also get their information as well.  I need to know thier cell phone, alternate number, email, twitter, instagram, facebook.  I find that social networking works great when they are not answering the phone.

Any other ideas???? I am open to all.

What strategies have other's used in reachign out to online students who are constantly submitting assignments in late????

I think it is a sign of the times when someone will respond to a facebook message before they will a text or voice mail message. I'm old fashioned but have learned/learning what different students respond to.

Sometimes the circumstances are out of your control area but as already noted here the best hope is thru a caring communicating with the student. letting them know you care and will work with them can save the day.

I've learned in 20+ years of teaching that I can't want it more than the student.  Dragging a student over the finish line is absolutely exausting.
