Motivation

Motivation is very important

The field book of activities that I use for motivation has really enhanced the classroom and keeps students actively engaged.

Money is a good motivator to use in my class.  You can show them what kind of money $$$ they can make if they pay attention in class and learn to enjoy it without getting someone killed, getting themselves hurt, or damaging equipment.

When you  see a students motivation  dissipating, and you see grades fall, participation and attendance becomes a problem for the student , these are red flags the studenthas issues or problems that need to be addressed.

I agree.  Most highly intellegent students don't feel the need for attending all classes but it can be a red flad the student does not enjoy or get along with other students.

Rick, this is so true. I just shared the 2014 salary study with my medical billing and coding students and it was an eye opening motivator. Over 65% of the students are single parents who have returned to school for a trade, in hopes of getting off the welfare system.  The "carrot" for them is INCOME and that is what keeps them returning to the classroom.

@Ridley2011 : Priscilla, my institution holds the instructors accountable for retention and motivation.  I am perfectly fine with that, but feel their should be instructor/student accountability. I see the red flags you mentioned, daily, but so many of them I cant do anything about.  So much of what affects the classroom occurs outside the classroom.

Good feedback, thanks it helps me to develope my master plan of becoming a better teacher!

I just recently printed the most up-to-date salary ranges for the  EHR and billing and coding students.  I will surely share that at the next class.  It does make a difference to many many students.
