Being professional in the class room

Each day I write in the top right hand corner of the board the word "Professional" and immediately below it I post the definition: 1. Knowledgeable 2. Ethics/morals.

Reason:

When there is a behavior pattern that is not consistent with the expected norm, I refer the student to the top right hand corner, by saying "that is not professional". Equally, if the behavior is worth applauding, for example, courtesy extended in any form to a class mate, I would say "that is being professional". Hopefully, the students will ponder first, whether their words or actions reflect the professionalism being trained towards.

I've learned a lot about teaching at a career college vs. an academic.  Thank you.

Do the student's feel as though you are "calling them out"? Are they receptive to this practice?

I really like that idea Gilbert.  I may steal it. :))  Many students have a lot of various work experiences and are switching to the medical field.  Last quarter it was hard to get them to understand that the field has been going to all black pens for documentation that isn't computerized.  I expected them to use them on all documentation that was handed in as my focus on the career expectations.  Some argued that in their former jobs much work is done in pencil.  I don't want them to have a rude awakening in their new profession if something as seemingly simple as what you are doing or other techniques that they will be using can be learned now.

The detail provided in the instructional materials will be put to good use by me.

Dee, be my guest. Thank you. I have learned alot from the various commentary. So feel free to do so. David, thank you, also for the remark. Your replies do serve as excellent motivational support. Teaching is not so straightforward. We have to serve as each other's cheerleader. Best regards.

Professionalism is my greatest goal for my students as we embark on the next quarter!  I like the idea of giving a visual reminder of what it means to be professional and to stress it each and every day!
