This presentation addressed numerous Physical Disabilities and that educators should have a general knowledge of physical and health impairments.  And that it is vital to know physical impairment can but may not necessarily impede a student's learning abilities.

this module provided an overview of disabilities and gave examples of what educators may do to accommodate students with specific disabilities

major categories included:

  •  students with physical or sensory disabilities
  • students with physical or health impairments
  • students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • students who are blind or hard of hearing

I learned about all the different disabilities I have never considered since I have not encountered them in the classroom. I also learned how we can better accommodate these students so that they have more positive educational outcomes.

In this section, I learned that there is a difference between a deaf person and a Deaf person. I also learned that different accommodations need to be made based on the student and that every student is different. I will implement talking to my students individually so that I can make accommodations based on what the student needs and not assumptions.

Having accommodations for students is important to allowing them to learn

There are many types of disabilities.

I learned that people tend to see the disability of the student and not the student. I learned the term hard of hearing means someone who has some type of hearing issue.

There are several physical disabilities that may require accommodations or modifications in the classroom

This lecture explained  difference between "deaf" and "Deaf". I will be sure to read each accommodation in detail to ensure I am following it appropriately in my classroom.

An individual with a physical disability may require individualized accommodations to ensure they are able to engage in learning.

I have learned about several different physical disabilities and how to accomodate them.

Accommodations can be made for people with physical disabilities that can help them navigate around and learn in the classroom.

There are laws protecting the rights of those with disabilities so we must ensure we are accommodating the disability.

Physical disabilities are really varied. It is important to reference the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as well as the Americans with Disabilities act when determining what course of action to assist the student.

I learned that it's important to remember that people with the same disability often don't require the same accomodation.

Physical disabilities can hinder many tasks, but a person's task should not be hindered by the perception of a physical disability.

In this section, I learned that there are a number of different disabilities, with a wide range of accommodations that can be used to effectively reach those students. I also learned that there is actually a difference between a deaf person and a Deaf person. I would have never known that, had I not read this section. It really is both humbling and empowering to know that there is so much that I don't know about certain disabilities but there is also a great deal of material that will assist me in the future, when I have students with special needs in my classroom.

I was interested to know that a buddy system could be used as an accomodation for some students.

I learned some ways of accomodating students with different types of disabilities.

Physical disabilities are challenging.
