I learned CTSOs are most effective when fully integrated into the classroom as intra-curricular components vs. when treated as after-school clubs. Key strategies include aligning competitive events with course projects, using CTSO standards crosswalks to guide instruction, and bringing in industry partners for authentic feedback. I also learned that access barriers—scheduling, finances, and disabilities—must be proactively addressed to reach all students, especially those at risk of disengagement.
I intend to apply this by reviewing my course projects to see which could double as CTSO competitive event entries, scheduling guest speakers during class time, and mapping out where in my program sequence every student will encounter the CTSO at least once. I will also work with my administration to secure funding and schedule adjustments so participation is truly equitable.
