I learned CTSOs are most effective when fully integrated into the classroom as intra-curricular components vs. when treated as after-school clubs. Key strategies include aligning competitive events with course projects, using CTSO standards crosswalks to guide instruction, and bringing in industry partners for authentic feedback. I also learned that access barriers—scheduling, finances, and disabilities—must be proactively addressed to reach all students, especially those at risk of disengagement.
I intend to apply this by reviewing my course projects to see which could double as CTSO competitive event entries, scheduling guest speakers during class time, and mapping out where in my program sequence every student will encounter the CTSO at least once. I will also work with my administration to secure funding and schedule adjustments so participation is truly equitable.

I have learned that by integrating the CTSO directly into the classroom, it provides more of an opportunity to ALL students to be a part of the CTSO and gain the benefits of the skills, knowledge and experiences that come with the CTSO.

I learned that CTSOs like SkillsUSA are meant to be part of what we already teach, not something extra. They give students a chance to apply what they learn in class through real projects, competitions, and leadership roles. I plan to connect more of my lessons and lab work to SkillsUSA events and standards so students can see how their classwork ties into career skills. I’ll also make sure every student gets a chance to take part, whether through class activities, school events, or competition prep.
