From this module, I have learned that effective career development is a collaborative system that requires alignment across roles (counselors, instructors, admin, & WBL coordinators) and across grade levels– elementary awareness → postsecondary prep. I learned the importance of staying current with workforce trends, policies, and regional opportunities, and that a structured Personal Professional Development Plan with five clear steps (reflect, connect, gather, discuss, apply) can keep my growth intentional and trackable.
I intend to apply this by first assessing my own knowledge gaps among the PD topics, then building a PPDP that includes joining a professional association and scheduling an externship with a local employer. I will also initiate cross-departmental conversations with my colleagues to map our current career development activities against the Awareness→ Exploration→ Preparation progression, identifying where we have gaps and where we can better infuse career content into existing coursework. Finally, I plan to document all my PD activities and regularly reflect on how each one translates into measurable student outcomes.
One take away was the importance of of continuing professional development in order to better support students in career readiness and future planning. Career pathways, workforce needs and industry expectations are constantly changing, so educators must continue to learn and adapt to provide students with relevant opportunities and guidance.
Utilizing externships provides a great opportunity to learn more about a specific field.
Externships are great opportunities for educators to be introduced to new trends in industries that can influence their approach to teaching students in the classroom.
To think for specifically on areas for improvement within certain job fields. For instance, this unit has inspired me to think further on how to use my grant money to further the education of students in health care and guide them towards nursing programs. I want to collaborate with local community college nursing programs to better spend these funds.
