Developing Emotional Intelligence
Our students must find balance between the different types of intelligence to be successful in the natural health environment they will be working in. I have found that our clinic/lab environment is the perfect forum to teach these skills. Some students naturally have more emotional intelligence innately and by being mentored by other students and intructors they are able to mirror the emotional intelligence it will require to be succesful with clients and the community.
Patricia,
Emotional intelligence is a critical part of career success especially in an industry like food service. The success of most restaurants is based upon the connection that diners have with the food served and the experience of dining.

In our industry, I try to stress the importance of emotional intelligence. When to use it and when to keep it under control. It is definitely something that needs to be worked on and refined on the job and in social situations.
Paul,
These students need to be able to develop their professional personality that will enable them to be successful in the workplace. If they let their personal lives impact their careers it won't be long before they will not have a career.

I see so many students comming to college who are lacking in the necessary emotional intellegence needed to endure the controls needed to be sucessful. Like fighting among peers, arugening with husbands, wife, etc. They are so consumed by their personal lives that they can't concentrate on their classes...PAUL T. ROUGEMONT
Gashaw,
As we get older we have more life experiences upon which to call and these experiences help us in making decisions. So in one way age is a factor but from a cognitive perspective we still process information in our dominant preference channel.

Do you think age is a factor?
Laurel,
One of the ways I help my students in this area is through case studies. I create case students that deal with decision making and emotional intelligence and we work through them. It helps them to see how emotions impact different types of situations and settings.

How can you help students develop emotional intelligence outside of/beyond modelling for students?
Suzie,
I love supervising these setting for the reasons you mention. The students start to see themselves as professionals and realize that they in fact can do the work that is required based upon the knowledge and skills they have learned in their classes.
