Concrete vs Abstract thinking

We know that different vocations attract thinkers of one type or the other (e.g.constructionn versus fashion design). Has anyone thought about the connection between each mode and various cultures? For instance, do people from an agricultural society or from a service-oriented society tend to think one way or the other? If so, how can we use that to improve our understanding of individuals who are locked into one mode or the other?

Certainly different cultures can influence how people think: abstract or concrete. Growing up is a good example of this. Younger people are more concrete as they learn by imitation where as we get older we can think abstactly and become more of an individual. As instructors we can be aware and facilitate the student's growth.

I think this is an important issue with regard to adult learning. We have classrooms filled with many different thinkers. In grade school teachers can assume the students will have similar maturity levels that affect learning. Where as, treachers in post secondary schools have to teach each individual differently.
