Professor Bon Coer,

First I would like to give you a round of applause for going beyond the call of duty to call a student and pose a very good question. Students must understand that their employer will expect them to mange their personal lives. This is a requirement of careers today and those that are good at this will remain employed, in economic downturn. This is a reality. I have found that students can handle personal matters best with school if they employ good time management techniques. I took the time management module for professors. I use the… >>>

Dionne, For the left brain instructor being organized comes easy. I was once told as a more right brain thinker that left brain activities should be modeled. Shadowing a left brain thinker was recommended. Can you share what best practices you have for organizing. I keep a calendar but still find that it gets too full. I recently turned down an engagement that I was not informed about well in advance and another committment, I got the organizer to meet with me another day though it was indicated it was mandatory training. I had tickets to go to a theater performance… >>>

Taking some time away from the virtual environment does help in returning with new ideas. When one cannot generate new ideas in writing it is probably due to needing a break from the task at hand. While away it is a good idea to do something enjoyed whether it is exercise, having breakfast or lunch with a friend, or getting together with a social group to do something fun.

I found this article applicable to my doctorate dissertation on leadership coaching. The comment that teachers are more coaches than gurus speaks to them having a facilitator role rather than being a master that knows all. Therefore one must be good at cultivating the student to be the best they can be and help them to leverage their strengths. I could also definitely relate to the change from the 1980's in classroom teaching to a virtual environment that is more "green" without paper.

I have also noticed teachers not working with teacher assistants given the massive grading that… >>>

Group think exists when a group is more concerned about consensus rather than doing what is ethical. This usually results in someone being harmed in the workplace. Sherron Watkins, the whistleblower in the Enron scandal is a perfect example (http:)//www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,194927,00.html. Sherron shared in a speech made at Small Business Day in Colorado that after the scandal she could not get a job in  Corporate America; so, doing speaking engagements and writing books was how she sustained herself. Fortunately, there are now laws that protect whistleblowers from employer retaliation (http://jobsearchtech.about.com/cs/labor_laws/a/whistle_blower_2.htm).

John,

This course will help me immensely with all of the balls I had in the air so to speak. My family, work, and personal life were all one collage of chaos until I was able to use the goal setting, task identification, sequencing, timing and analyzing. This is a powerful tool for time management and I might add stress management as well.

Respecting that there are experts on a team that you manage and that you could learn from contributes to the leader's effectiveness. The time management course had me reflect on my effectiveness in classroom leadership of students into teams as well as how I am being lead by superiors in the work place. The idea that the employee should analyze time wasters and take their findings to their boss with solutions, is profound.

Micromanaging in my opinion could be an indication of a lack of trust. Why hire qualified staff and then expect them to do things exactly as you would? What a waste of human capital and innovation. Micromanagers  have experienced also burning themselves out since this is another form of unwillingness to delegate. This is not good for the manager or employee.

Hi Jon,

Your points demonstrate the true character of a leader. I would like to add my sentiments from a team player viewpoint. We should also expect that I leaders do not have all of the answers and not criticize them when they honestly do not. We should contribute our knowledge to the team not to belittle our leaders but to add value to the team and show appreciation to our leaders who are there to cultivate our professional development with their leadership ability. By doing so there is a win-win for our team. Always remember that though we have… >>>

Applying the knowledge soon after it is learned is key to retaining it and continued practice. I also think that the assessment design should fit the person's learning style. Multiple choice tests for kinesthetic learners just do not work, since it has not allowed an opportunity to experience the learning. Sometimes our superiors are challenged with focusing on organizational goals that sometimes getting their attention to our IDLP goals is a challenge. I agree that it is important to visit both and ensure alignment.
