LeeAnn, This is a great observation. Also, the students can use the learning objectives as a "checklist" to note the skills that they have acquired, while taking the course. Tremayne Simpson
Timothy, Thank you for your post. I have used a similar method with my students and have found it to be highly effective. It is tough to present new material to students that are not "ready" for it. Tremayne Simpson

LeeAnn, Are students given the opportunity to evaluate the course? There may not be room for changes, however student feedback could be helpful in future policy/lesson revisions, if necessary. Tremayne Simpson
Bruce, It is imperative that the classroom is physically conducive to the course concepts. I can assume that it would be very difficult to teach an electronic health records course, without providing the students with access to computers. Tremayne Simpson
Gerald, Additional course supplements can inspire the student to further understand the lectured concepts. It also helps when the students can relate to the devices that are used in a lesson (i.e. cards and dice). Thank you for your post. Tremayne Simpson
Gerald, This is a great observation. Many students begin the class with a "what's in it for me" attitude and they look to the learning objectives to define the importance of the course. As a General Education instructor, it is important that I discuss how the learning objectives of my course will assist the student with their career goals and future aspirations. Tremayne Simpson
Bruce, In addition, learning objectives serve as qualitative assessments for the students in class. If a student can review the learning objectives (after the end of the class)and confidently feels that they have acquired the skills, then they can feel a true sense of learning. Tremayne Simpson

Bruce, Student evaluations can work as "building blocks" in an instructor's development. I find that saving student evaluations and comparing them with later terms of instruction, can serve as a reflective, career timeline for an instructor. Thank you for the post. Tremayne Simpson

Bruce, I agree that lesson plans can naturally improve an instructor's time management. However, in most cases, there are deviations (usually generated by intriguing class discussions) during a lecture that may alter the planned lesson. With that in mind, it is important that instructors allow for flexibility in their lesson plans. Tremayne Simpson
Jane, This is an excellent suggestion, because many students commonly utilize Netflix. Do you show the films in class or just make reference to a few clips? In all cases, instructors should be mindful of their institution's compliance requirements, in regards to use of films in class. Tremayne Simpson
