Hi Nate Great point about employers involvement in the curriculum of a school. The employers can tell you what is needed now and spell out future needs. In that way you will know that your training will always meet the needs of the ever changing workplace. You will have time to work with instructors and curriculum developers to ensure your programs are current. Employers can evaluate learning materials and equipment too. Best wishes Dr. Susan F. Hi Suzaane This is a great point. The placement department has to understand the students' skill levels in terms of employment readiness. Do they have a good work ethic? An understanding of what they have to do to get ready for the first interview? How what they learn in school will apply on the job. Placement also has to keep in touch with grads who are working in the field. Were they sufficiently trained to be effective? Did they need other skills for success the first day on the job? Makes me think that maybe students should be required to… >>>

What surveys can you easily create and implement now to measure placement success?
Start to think about the exercises outlined in this module and how you can encourage students to begin to work on them. Who can you get to assist with these exercises? People on staff? From the community?
Who can you ask to provide employer presentations? Who in your community can you call on to be a guest speaker about the industries for which you train? What do you have to do to approach these people to be part of your Placement Department?
Assess your current placement services, if you offer any. What can be improved? If you do not offer any formal placement services, how can you realistically start to develop one?

You might find that if you worked on a five year plan all the other plans will fall into place. Just a thought. Susan

Hi Sheree Here are my additional thoughts: We have experienced some turnover and I think it has clouded the perception of some reporting lines and job descriptions. Susan: In addition to an org chart, job descriptions help. You might want to write the job description as you understand it. Then let the staff write what they think their job description is. Then compare. Interesting results. I think that asking staff and faculty to draw their idea of our organizational chart and their own job description is a great way to find out if long time staff and new staff are… >>>

Hi Seth Great that you are consistently working on this program. The continuity maintains focus and results. Good points about ways to enhance your placement offerings. Here are some additional thoughts: Internship/externships: You might want to be sure these experiences are relevant to the workplace and that students write up their experiences in resume format. Practicums like these can be a great substitute for work experience when the student has none. Remember to tell your admissions reps to sell the concept of intern/exterships. Interview skills: Yes, these are basic skills that must be learned and practiced. You might want to… >>>

If you were asked to select the five top plans to put in place today, which would they be? What does your committee have to say?
