Suzanne The course sounds great. It does seem that the placement dept should be involved in some way to create seamless offerinsg. Susan
Hi Jennifer Yes, you have idenitifed another benefit of good placement services. Keeping in touch with grads to find out placement results and job retention. Also good for admissions because grads can recommend new students and enroll in your other programs or continuing ed. Susan
Suzanne Given your great and comprehensive placement offerings. can you tell us about placement results and also job retention figures. Thanks Susan
Kim Sounds like you have clearly identified your problems. Makes it easy to figure out solutions. Maybe require students to attend a certain number of sessions with placement. Also be sure your faculty and staff know your services and let students know. Somehow placement has to be part of everyones thoughts about going to school. Best wishes, Susan
Hi Suzanne Thanks for all the great information. Something for all schools to apply. I like the open door policy of your placement department. Do you have records of how many students use the services. Or how many don't. The field trips sound great. And very relevant. Relevancy is always a challenge for schools. Sounds like your advisory board is amazing because you value and act on their opinions. Thanks Susan

Hi Suzanne Wow! Sounds like you are doing everything right. A real model placement department. You say that students are required to attend the job fairs. Great. What kind of preparation does the student get priorto attending? Are there workshops or briefing sessions so they are prepared? You mention that your placement department contacts employers weekly. That is the key, isn't it? It takes constant follow up to get a good source of industry reps. I like the idea of field trips. Wondering if they are formalized or depend on the coordinator or people at the host site. Specifically, are… >>>

Sounds like you are getting feedback from grads and also employers. Are you keeping any statistics? Do you use the information to improve your placement services or curriculum? It is interesting that you are not keeping in touch with grads who are not seeking employment. Are these grads already working or did they enroll with no employment goals in mind? I think that information gathered from them could be very interesting. Good thoughts. Susan
The Job Seeking and Leadership and Management classes sound great. Are all students required to enroll in them? I'd be interested in the topics covered in each class. Any learning materials provided? The trick is to get a good pool of people from business who are willing and able to visit your school. They can offer tips and workshops on the subtleties of getting hired and keeping a job. Good points. Susan
Bringing employers and people from your industry into a school is a challenge. Sounds like you are on the right track by going to chamber meetings. Maybe there are other professional organizations to network. Also what about contacting employers of your grads? Establish relationships so they will want to visit your school. Sometimes folks on PAC get tired out. It's good to have a pool of employers to call on. Susan
Agreed that placement services department needs to reach out to all your faculty and staff. Placement will be as effective as the feedback and involvement you get from your school. Maybe this points to placement working with all students to learn their strengths. Maybe placement should take on the skills of a true staffing agency. Good points. Susan
