I really learned from the tips on how to handle and class that is rowdy or starting to get out of control. I mainly teach lab classes so I don't have too many issues, but I like the idea of starting each class with a fun activity to encourage to students to be on time to class.

Having an organized desk/lab area and being organized for class helps a lot and reduces some of the stress for new instructors. It also conveys a sense of professionalism to your students.

I learned that you always start by listening. Let the student state their issue or problem, once they have finished ask some questions in regards to the students issues. After that then begin to work towards a solution.

I find that the longer I teach the better I am at correcting the issues with inattentive students. There were so very good ideas in the presentation.

I took away that it's very important to ensure your students understand what it will take to be successful in the course from day one. Also multiple reminders for assignment due dates in the course syllabus and in class to minimize late assignments.

I need to remember that even if I can delivery the course content lesson plans will assist anyone that may need to fill in for me.

Helping everyone to become more comfortable in class by learning names and short introductions is very helpful. Day one has a lot of information for students so cover the most important information in-person, follow up with additional information in the next class if needed.

I took away the importance of being prepared and organized for not only the class but also the material that you are presenting for the class period. The course syllabus on day one sets the tone for the course.

As a 20 year army veteran and instructor/evaluator, these are many of the key tenets taught to Non-commissioned Officers in professional development courses. My biggest take away is to never assume that you are the smartest one in the classroom.

I feel like a workplace education style would work well for our school. We work closely with many local industry groups and it would be benefitial both for our industry partners and the students.
