Clayton, Nice job. You are correct in that feedback must be personalized and timely and provided to help students improve. Many times instructor and students feel like assessment is something done "to" students, but it should be something done "with" students. Thanks for your input.

Jennifer, Thank you for your organized thoughts and for adding to the conversation. When you speak of organized objectives and clear expectations, they go hand in hand. Meeting the course objectives/outcomes lay the foundation for what is expected from the students. As you note though - communication is the key. Edutainment is a work that keeps coming up over and over again. It's many times hard to get everything done that you need to do in the class and keep students attention all the time. Nice job.

Clayton, Thank you for your organized and complete thoughts about this forum discussion topic. You have developed your own "CVU" system. You can carry this throughout the course in many different ways. You will communicate, be visible to students, and try to understand where they are coming from. Students are expected to communicate with you, be visible online in a timely manner and will ask if they don't understand. Love it. It's your online teaching philosophy in the development stage. Nice job.

Charlene, Knowing your "students" is key to effective teaching. Many times I use a diagnostic evaluation the first day of class. It can be as simple as one question. "Here's the name of this course. . .what do you believe you already know about the topic?" OR You can have students assess their knowledge (beginner, intermediate learner, master) of the course objectives. This lets you know what they believe they know and you can adjust the timeline of covering course content. Asking students what their "muddiest point" is from a lecture, syllabus review, etc. is also essential. Many times students… >>>

Donna, Thank you for adding to the conversation in this forum. I like your quoted phrase "finger on the pulse." You are exactly right that you must organize your content/material, provide it to students in a variety of ways and make sure you are assessing throughout to make sure students are on track. Nice job.
Charlene, Your insights into feedback are correct. As an instructor, you must be specific to help the students not only understand that they did something incorrectly, but why it was incorrect. This helps them improve. When you tie feedback to learning outcomes/objectives (typicaly through the use of a rubtic), the student further understand what is expected of them. Very nice.

Clayton, Many times the road map must be revisited to make sure you're on track. ;-) You are correct in adding these three important aspects to the discussion in this forum. You must know where you're going (goals/objectives/outcomes) before the students will understand where they are going. And, you must be able to assess whether they got there to know if you and your students have been successful. Nice job.

Charlene, Thanks for adding to the conversation in this forum. The key word in your considerations is "communication." You communicate through your syllabus, through a variety of technologies and through your actions. Nice job.

Charlene, Thank you for your organized feedback. You have touched on three important aspect and have added to the conversation of this forum. Navigation within a course is many time overlooked, yet so important. Students need to be able to find information, know where to deposit information/assignments, and understand what learning tools are availble to them. You mention a variety of learning tools and it is important to provide different opportunities for students to learn the content. Nice job.
