Michelle, You are correct in that student feedback provides information to help you improve the course. Students many times do not feel their feedback on course evaluations is important because it does not benefit them. So, it must be stressed that you need their help in making the course better. You can also ask for their feedback during the course and make improvements as you go along. It doesnt' always have to be at the end of the course. Nice job.
Michelle, Keeping feedback consise and to the point is a good idea. Many times it's hard to give students complete feedback in a concise way, but it is important ot try. Many times I grade the same document twice. I grade it one time for one aspect and then again for another particular aspect. That way students get sufficient feedback in a concise format. Helping them improve is the point. Nice job.
Nicholas, You are moving right along in this course. Thanks again for your input. Students evaluations do provide teachers with great information so that the course can be revised. This should be an ongoing process and not just done at the end of the course. Ask for formative feedback throughout the course. Ask: "What should I start, stop and continue to do in this class." You might be surprised at the helpful answers you get! Nice job.

Nicholas, Communication, communication, communication. . . did I say communication? Ha! You are correct. I tell those teaching online all the time: "If you want to get BAD teaching evaluations, DON'T communicate!" Teachers many times don't realize how many ways they communicate to students. You communicate through your syllabus, clear directions, rubrics, your feedback and assessment, and through a variety of technologies. Whether or not you provide feedback in a timely manner or not communicates a lot about you. Thanks for your input.
Nicholas, Again you are right on target. Feedback should be positive, help the individual student, consistent and timely. Your last statement is particularly true - it's about helping the students improve. Many times an example up front and definitely a well defined/structured rubric is effective in helping students understand what is expected of them before they begin the assignment/project. I love the saying: Assessment is not something we do TO students, it's something we do WITH students. Nice job.

Nicholas, You bring good ideas to the table. Thanks for your input. There is no doubt that the learning outcomes of the course are essential. If students understand what is expected of them, they understand how to achieve what is expected and they can navigate the course, there's a great chance they will succeed. Nice job.

Michelle, Thank you for your organized and well-thought out input in this forum. You are right on target in that content, communication and assessment are essential components to an effective online course. You can use a simple diagnostic assessment at the beginning of your course to determine what the students know or don't know. This helps establish a guideline for content and/or how quickly or slowly you may need to move through the content. As I have said many times in these forums - communciation is KEY! And, feedback and assessment (whether student driven or from others who have taught… >>>

Lynn, Thanks for your input. I love your enmphasis on planning. You know once you plan you have to go back and plan on when to plan again! ;-) You are right on target. The course objectives communicate a lot to the students. The communicate expectations and outcomes. How to achieve the outcomes is based on that clear path you discuss on how to get from the beginning of the path to the end of the path. When the students want to keep continuing on the path after the course is over, you really know you have done your job!… >>>

Joseph, You bring good topics for discussion to this forum. Good teaches must assess what has been learned and it's most beneficial when students can transfer their knowledge to the "real world." All of the feedback you collect from students and others provide important key elements to take into consideration when revising the course. Course revision is a constant cycle. Nice job.

Cheryl, I'm thrilled this is relevant to your current teaching situation. Massey has a lot to say about the topic. And, you are right, assuming and generalizing many times just get us into trouble. Each class is made up of different students and we have to find out who they are to effectively reach them. . .where they are. Thanks for the "link" to Massey where we can go look up more information on the subject. Nice job.
