Michelle, I agree, there are more than 3 things! There are always a multitude of things to do, but you are on target with establishing your top three. The syllabus is a key component in communicating many things to the students, but especially the expections/objectives. Technology is key to making sure you can communicate with the students, they can communicate with you and each other and they can complete/submit assignments and post discussion board postings or whatever your requirements. To make all of this happen. . .you are right - organization and communication. Nice job.

Susan, You bring up good points. You may have to follow the syllabut, but you are right that you have some flexibility in makeing sure the objectives are relevant, the student can achieve the objectives and they can understand what they need to accomplish. Making the course easy to use and easy to navigate will help accomplish these goals. Thank you.

Victoria, I'm glad you found this module interesting and helpful. As you know, some generations' values and "personality" aspects overlap. One generation may have similar values and then be very different from another generation. That's what makes us "us" and makes us interesting. You are right on target when you note that education must help each generation be successful in the classroom. Thank you for your input and insight.

Tanya, Yes, can you expand on that? Do rubrics help serve as a guide for you as well? Thanks for your additional input.

Shana, Thanks for your input. You do need to think about the make up of your course. Each course is different and students come to the classroom with different knowledge and skills. Good point. The navigation of the content and proper assessment/evaluation is essential as well. Nice job.

We know the benefits of using rubrics to evaluate students’ work.  Using rubrics to evaluate students work makes assessment easier and more consistent.  A rubric is simply a grading tool that not only helpful to the instructor, but helpful to the students as well.  The rubric provides a set of criteria to help students understand what is expected.

Many times, however, there is one component that is missing from the rubric. The criteria should be linked to learning outcomes/objectives. When students see learning outcomes/objectives in the syllabus, they typical just read them and move on.  They don’t really connect what… >>>

Victoria, Thank you for your organized and complete feedback to this forum. I liked that you put your thoughts into three distinct questions instructors should ask themselves. It is important to understand what the students know about technology and what barriers you may run into. Every class will be different. But, as you noted, you must first understand your own purpose before beginning. Then, communicating to the students so they understand what they are doing or should be doing is equally important. Thank you.

Michelle, Great input. Thank you. The course outcomes/objectives are typically the first place to start. What do you want your students to be able to do. . .and then. . .you can figure out how to get them there. The interaction, feedback and communication are key components. Without these things instructors earn very poor teaching evaluations. Thanks again for your input in this forum.

Jessica, The use of technology is very important. Many students may see technology as a stumbling block and other students may see it as an effective tool to success. Connecting what they do in discussion boards or other areas of technology to the course objective is important. The students (no matter what generation) must understand why they are doing what they are doing. Thanks for your input.

Many instructors look at the seven principles for learning developed by Arthur Checkering and Stephen Ehrmann in 1996 as basic guidelines for teaching.  The seven principles for learning were developed as guidelines for instructors to improve teaching and learning.

However, when approached from the student’s point of view, they provide excellent guidelines to share with students so students understand what they need to do to be more successful. It has been said that what is taught is as important as how it is taught, but how it is taught may have more of an impact on learning than the content… >>>
