Tawanda, Thank you for your thoughtful and organized response to this forum. You are correct in that time, rubrics and communication are very important. I have a 24 hour turn around for my communication, feedback and assessment whenever possible. It's good to set you guidelines and let the students know up front. Thanks again.

Claireann, Congratulations on your certification. This will help you in the future as you begin to teach online. Your input is right on target. Online instructors need to know where their students are coming from - what they know. A pre-test is a good way to do that. And, then you can give a post-test to evaluate what they have learned. Communicating your expectations whether through the syllabus or in other ways is invaluable. Assessment that is meaningful and relevant is essential as well. Thanks for your input.

Victoria, Thanks for your input. You are exactly right in that rubrics play more than one role. Helping students understand the expectations and being consistent in your evaluation is excellent. Addtional feedback with overall is helpful to students as well. Don't forget to let students use the rubrics for self- and peer-evaluation too. Every type of evaluation helps. ;-] Thanks again for your input.

Susan, My favorite learning space is one that is blended. You can keep your face-to-face (F2F) connection/relationships, but then extend their learning online. You are right on target with a dynamic syllaubs, commmunicaiton and scaffolding. Helping students online or F2F benefits us all. Thank you.
Susan, I agree. Many times instructors think they should just provide feedback (usually in a summative format) and that's the end of that. But you are right, it should enhance the learning process and help the students and instruction continue the conversation about improvement. I have said before to students, "I don't understand what you don't understand." That's because we needed more communication. Thank you.

Susan, You are right that there are many things to consider, but you did a great job outlining three important aspects. With our learning outcomes, skill and clear expectations, learning will not occur. Communication is a thread that runs through all of these aspects as well. Nice job.

Robert, Thank you for your thoughtful response. You are right on target with your information and your writing structure intrigues others to read your postings. Thank you. Important things others will learn from your posting: Learning outcomes Know where your students are coming from Language and communication Nice job.

Remember when you used to each face-to-face (F2F) and you did icebreakers with students on the first day of class?  Well, you can do the same thing in an online class. Icebreakers not only help students get to know each other, but also help them feel comfortable in the online classroom and learn how to communicate with others and use some of the technology tools.  When teaching students online, it's just as important (or maybe more) that students get to know each other and develop an online community.   Try some of the following icebreakers.

Students are asked to… >>>

Michelle, You are VERY fortunate to also be able to touch base with students face-to-face (F2F) and make sure you are doing a great job in the online classroom. Keep it up. However, when you do start to teach online and never see your students, think about how you can take that personal touch you have now and keep it in the online classroom. Nice job.
Michelle, Thank you for your input in this forum. Timeliness, consistency, and individualized instruction and feedback are essential. With these three things, you will be on the right track to being a successful teacher and helping students be successful as well. Thank you again.
