Tina, Asking a similar question helps students transfer their skills. That's important. Immediate feedback typically has to be defined. What students may think is "immediate" = 2 minutes and what I think of as "immediate" (depeding on how many students I have in the class) can be 24 hours. I've had 200-400 students in one online class and "immediate" is the word I define first. ;-) Thanks!

Tina, It's interesting that you bring up empathy. I don't think others have thought of that. You do have to think about what the students are going through. Many classes can be difficult for them. When you look at it from this perspective your instructions and communication become more effective and detailed. Nice job.
Angela, Sounds like you are incorporating a variety of types of evaluations. The students can give you a whole different perspective from other faculty or your own review. Nice job.

Thanks Harry. The learning objectives are the first place to start. If students don't understand what is expected and the instructor doesn't know what to assess, the course cannot be successful. Thanks again.

I get many questions about developing good rubrics.  There are some common mistakes individuals make which lead to flaws and the improper design and use of rubrics. Here are a few pitfalls.  Stay away from them!

  • Putting too many criteria in the rubric: Four to eight criteria is typically optimal.
  • Using “quantity” criteria components in a rubric: For example, “Report cites 10 sources.” You can use a checklist for this.
  • Using a varying scale to judge one criterion: If the top criterion is “Sources support report’s purpose statement” and it’s worth 5-6 points, what is the difference between 5 points

Angela, Thanks for your input. Starting with positive feedback is a good place to start and then make sure your feedback is constructive and not "destructive" and another person in this class stated. Your feedback should help students improve. Nice job.
Miranda, I'm glad you mentioned accessibility. Many people don't think about that. Having easy access to the tools, being able to navigate within them and them working when they should are key elements. Nice job.
Miranda, The communication code of conduct helps students understand what is ethical and respectful. Negativity can hinder any classroom. We learn from the past. Keep going! Thanks.

Miranda, You will find that each class is different. They come in with different expectations, different learning styles, different needs/wants, and come from different genterations. Teaching = Interesting! You are right! I love it though. Hope you do to.

Miranda, Rubrics are your FRIEND! I'm so sad to hear you say that faculty did not use rubrics. What about in high school? I have taught either high school, technical college and at the university level since 1983 and have always used them. They help students understand the project and expectations and help you be more consistent in your grading. Thanks for your input.
