Edwin, Yes, rubrics help students understand the expectations and hopefully help them self- or peer-assess as well. They also help the instructor be more consistent in their feedback and hopefully provide information to help the students learn. Thanks!

William, The key is that the rubrics are for the instructor and the students. It helps the instructor grade more consistently and helps the students understand the expectations. Thanks.

Jason, I do check more often than I tell students, but I also run a Frequently Asked Questions Discussion Board that other students can answer for extra credit. After the first couple of weeks, it seems to take of itself, although I do check briefly each day. But, briefly, as other students are doing the work for extra credit. And, I mean minimal extra credit. I give somethiing like 5 points extra credit out of 400 for the total class. Once a student answers another student's questions on the FAQ discussion board and it is correct and complete, I email… >>>

Melissa, But don't forget about formative assessments too. They help you determine if students are grasping the material or what you may need to spend more time on. Thanks!
Jason, You bring up some good points. Being timely is so important. I use the rule of 24 hours. I'll get back to students or provide feedback within 24 hours unless there is an extreme circumstance. Being specific and constructtive helps the students learn more from the assessment as well. Nice job.

Jason, I'm a detailed syllabus lover. My syllabi are much longer for my online students. And, keeping the communication going is very important. Nice job.
