William, I agree that the instructor can serve as an excellent role model with communication and on the discussion board but don't let the students think you'll be the leader of all discussions. They needs to learn to effectively discuss among themselves and assigning student leaders can help to do this. Thanks for your input on this forum.

William, Right on. Connecting what you want the students to learn to the course expectations (learning outcomes) and measuring their success is essential. Good list. Thank you.
David, I ask students to NOT email me but post the question on the FAQ discussion board so all can benefit from the question and answer. I tell them that general questions are not beneficial and they must be specific. I also provide minimal extra credit for students who completely and correctly answer each others questions. It works for me and my students. Thanks for your input.
Dale, You can start from "scratch" with students and let them help you build the rubric. The can use the rubric to self-assess, peer-assess and provide feedback on the rubric at any time. These are all ways to keep them involved and engaged. Thanks for your input in this and all of the forums.
Dale, Thanks for your input. We all have our views, typically based on our experience. Students can be an essential part of the learning process and have fresh, new ideas. Thanks!

Dale, Right on. After we use a rubric, we should review them to make sure they are assessing what we want them to assess. It's like the course revision process, it's a constant thing. Thanks!

Dale, There is such a thing a "death by PowerPoint." Ha! It's good to get out of the box. Thanks for your input.
Dale, There is a ton of information out there. Rubistar is a great place to look as well. Thanks!
Dale, Just because you find something online (such as a rubric) does not mean you have to use it verbatim. You can get an idea of categories, criteria, etc., but tweak it to meet your needs and connect them to the objectives. You're not doing "research" per se, but getting ideas for rubrics you will create yourself. Hope this helps.

Dale, The criteria are essential. They do enhance the ability for students to understand the expectations, make the connection with the objectives and measure what you want to measure. Thanks!
