Patricia, Awesome. Thanks for your testimony. I too find this helpful. I typically give the first couple of rubrics for assignments and grade using those and then start to involve students in a bigger project's rubric. But, you're right. They buy in from students is important. Thanks!
Eugene, Right. That added value is what helps them improve. And, when the rubric has effective criteria, that also helps the students understand why points are being deducted. Thanks for your input.
John, Ah - once you figure it out though, isn't it a great relief and level of satisfaction? ;-). Keep it up!

Christina, The rubric does allow for that identification of class wide trouble spots and that's when I think carefully about editing the project and/or rubric and/or asking students where the confusion came about. It's a great point to start the revision process. Thanks!
Christina, I too like to include some synchronous components to the online environment. I think the students feel more like a "person" (as they are!) and less like a number. This is especially true in my large online courses. Any chance I get to teach a blended course, I do. I like that F2F component as well as the online component. Thanks for your input.

Christina, Very interesting point. Many do not think about the work/life separation as they seem to work all the time. That is one thing the online instructor must carefully consider. We have to set those designated times for work and life. Thanks for bringing this up!

Christina, There are instructors who are "night owls" and those that are "early birds" and work well in the a.m. Finding the time where you can concentrate on the task at hand is the key. The template of responses and calendar to help with organizing your time will help save you time. Nice job.
Janis, I thought I just answered this posting, but sometimes, my post doesn't "take." ;-) But, I think you may find by involving the students in developing the rubric will help them understand the steps to getting the right answer. Thanks!
Janis, You may find that having the students design the rubric will help them think through the process. Maybe you could also have the students do something additional with the "right answer." Not sure that will work, but it's something to think about.

michael, Excellent description. Thanks for articulating the importance of the criteria, competency level and points assigned for each level. Adding the objectives to the rubrics is also helpful to students. Thanks!
