About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Nelson, I think you make a great point about the need to separate personal issues. This can be a significant issue if you allow those personal feelings (of any kind) to interfere in the negotiation phase. Ryan
Mary, I appreciate your desire to help people. I think you will find the more that you practice effective coaching, the more you will develop others as coaches & often they are ready & able to return that help to you. Coaching really can be a great give-give type of situation where everyone benefits. Ryan
I love all of the areas you identified, especially your point about the "vivid plan." It is so crucial to have a plan to continue to develop these traits in yourself & others, not just rest on laurels. Great. Ryan
Darryl, Absolutely right. Once agreement is had that there is a problem or area of concern, not the effective manager relies on those strong negotiating skills to come to develop a good action plan in partnership with the employee. Ryan
Yes & I would add to know why you are speaking & make sure your audience knows why you are presenting to them. This is not always made known. Ryan
Theresa, Great use of top-down, especially given that your collections person is new to her role & pursuing those delinquent payments can be somewhat sticky. As she develops more skill & time in the role, most likely you will be able to slowly move to a bottom-up approach. Ryan
Absolutely & by listening actively & hearing what most concerns them, we can demonstrate how what we are offering helps meet those needs. Or work to find an even better solution. Great points. Ryan
David, Great points. I have found it useful in these situations to be sure I stick with objective facts in describing what is going on. It's not that I am uncaring (I completely agree with you on listening, questioning, engaging) but I have found this helpful when talking about behaviors. Too often when I describe behaviors I am project my interepretation onto it, rather than saying here is what's happening, let's discuss why & how to resolve. Ryan
Great Ashley & very important. Always determine the goal ahead of time, not in the midst of developing the presentation.
Agreed. I prefer the bottom up over all, but sometimes it is just a must for the manager to utilize top down.
