About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Lynn,

You make a great point.  During my dissertaion work, one of my participants provided me with a great quote that I actually framed & have in my office.  "I think real growth comes in taking knowledge and coupling it with experience & turning it into wisdom."  I thought of that when I read your comments.

Ruben, I think this is a good way of putting it in perspective for the employees, especially to understand the potential differences in levels of management/leadership. I also think this provides for leaders to be at all levels as any one can help influence those goals & objectives. Ryan
Walter, I think this is a great idea. As you said, spending the time to find out what they have previously experienced allows for that tailoring. Not only does it make the content more meaningful, but also the participants really will appreciate your taking the step to do this.

Jim, Great point & often it is hard to distinguish between these two terms. For some there is not a difference. I have found that a lot of it depends on which type of coaching your are thinking about. There is performance coaching which is much the same as managing. In this case I try to help an individual improve their behavior or on a certain task. Another type of coaching is what we would consider career coaching. In this instance it is much more about what the other person hopes to do, what their goals are & helping them… >>>

Nothing to add to this great point, other than I think I will take your last statement (with proper credit of course!) & share it with those I am coaching regarding presentations. I love the way you put that. Ryan
Great point Kenneth. I will admit that as a presenter I tend to have this struggle. Or along with this I have a great story or illustration & sometimes get so wrapped up in that, that I really fail to make the point I was intending to with my story. Ryan

You nailed it Geoffrey. I think it's important for those in leadership to make sure they are distinguishing between goals, vision statements, strategies & tactics. I have found in my work that these are often confused & all mixed together. A vision statement can be somewhat vague & long-term, but a goal must meet those SMART qualifications. Tactics are how you get there. Great post. Ryan

That is a great, physical & literal way to demonstrate the different roles.

You are right. I have said before (& in this forum) that coaching to me is really the aspect of leadership & you lead people, often toward goals that they have cooperatively established. Management is more about resources or things; you manage tasks & things. Ryan

Wayne, You are so right & I too have seen this happen many times before. In addition to the ego factor, I have also found that some managers have a hard time letting go of the satisfaction they get from solving the problems themselves. Often they formerly did that job & so it feels so good to show their own expertise. I have found that these folks are often struggling with the role of manager & so they're looking for something to fill their bucket which then takes from someone else's bucket. Thanks for the post Wayne. Ryan
