About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Absolutely! I find this is not only important from a content standpoint but also from actual presentation. If the person going before me is a wonderful orator & I'm not as strong in that area that will make me work twice as hard to prepare incredibly good content & brush up on my speaking skills, etc.

Hi Joyce - We have not done a research study on public schools but the Imagine America Foundation (a non-profit organization affiliated with the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities) commissioned an independent case study to measure the impact of faculty development in a proprietary school setting. The program evaluated was based on the MaxKnowledge faculty training courses offered through the Center for Excellence in Education. The evaluation was conducted by the ROI Institute, an organization that specializes in measuring the impact of training programs and is recognized by the American Society for Training and Development. Tania, Absolutely. Some people do have a talent for speaking & confidence cannot be replaced. I work with students on this everyday & try & encourage those who may not be as natural to make sure they prepare so they too have a source for confidence. Ryan
Tania, Yes & audience analysis really does not take a great deal of time. Essentially it's a matter of asking some good questions & thinking it through. I'm glad that idea resonated with you. Ryan
Videotaping & peer review...two of the most humbling, yet powerful techniques for getting some really good feedback on your presentations. It sounds like you found that experience helpful too. Ryan
Excellent Marie. The important thing is to realize the different personalities that exist & work with each person differently. Ryan
Yes & I would also add to have strong transitions between major points. This area is often overlooked in presenting. It can make a good presentation even better as it helps the audience know where you are in the presentation, alerts them that you are moving to a new point & is another way you can be reinforcing your points along the way. Ryan
So true Megan. I like your point about helping others adjust to & thrive in changing environments. I too see the value of coaching for this & strongly feel this is the greatest need of today. I think we focus too much on one particular change rather than helping people become more adaptable to all of life's changes. In our rapidly changing world, we have to develop this ability in ourselves & others. Great thought. Ryan
Good list. Along with anticipating questions I would add to make sure that you have the data & information you will need to intelligently answer those questions. Ryan
Great points. I especially liked the terminology you use of "authorizing" the one being coached. As I interpret that it's the act of the coach giving power & leadership to the coachee. I like that phrase. Ryan
