About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Mark, Thank you for applying this to working with students. I have long felt that coaching is very applicable in this area as well. In fact, in some languages "leader" and "teacher" are the same words. Ryan
Well put Mark! I also think that the more we allow people to learn from mistakes & not punish them for these (as long as their new mistakes) then we are also coaching. Ryan
Todd, That is great to hear. This is something that I strongly encourage of all managers, unfortunately few follow through. To me what makes it a good use of time is (for 1 thing) there is a clear agenda & both of you know why you are having the meeting & I'm guessing you often walk away with definite action items. Glad to hear this! Ryan
Yes & our job as the leader/coach is to make sure that we are not just giving extra responsibilities but that we are truly giving meaningful work that will help our employees grow. Ryan
Brandon I agree that listening is so important. Especially level 3 or "global listening." This is the type of listening that occurs when I, as the coach, has completely removed myself from the situation & I am listening to the other person with all that I am. In this way I can best serve my employees. In my own leadership experience over the years I have found this very powerful. Ryan
Megan, You are so very right. This is a great definition/summary of coaching & I completely agree that all leaders & managers should be coaches. Thank you. Ryan
Arthur, I apologize for the delayed response. So it seems that you are saying that a Leader and a Coach are two different functions?
Scott, Good "in the moment" strategy. I'm curious, what do you do ahead of time to analyze the audience & really customize the presentation during the preparation phase?
Discussion Comment
Absolutley & I believe that the function of the team or group leader is to help eliminate as many roadblocks as possible to help nearly all goals be reasonable. Ryan

Earl & Dorothy,

I love your thoughts in your posts & to me this emphasizes the need for us to helping students learn & develop the ability to learn, adapt & change.  Yes content is important, but to me the most important thing I can help my students learn is how to adapt to the ever changing world we live in.  If they walk out of my class/course further ahead in that area I consider it a success.

Ryan
