About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Good point Susana, goals that are this far out of reach are only setting you up for disapointment. Ryan
So true, and I have found that if I take the time to clearly state my thoughts & vision this in turn helps the team to know expectations. Which, once they know my expectations they are in a better position to offer their thoughts & recommendations, as long as I am listening. Ryan

Great point. I think we shy away from challenging goals too often rather than looking to things like team work & persistence to achieve them. Ryan
So true. Too many approach these situations with the proverbial hammer where every problem is a nail. By learning more about the other person we can better tailor our style to best help them. Ryan

Jennifer, I think you captured a key point here. Too often, management seems to be about making the other person wrong or at least pointing out to them where they are wrong. Coaching looks for the learning opportunities & seeks to help folks learn what's right about what they're doing. Thanks, Ryan

You're exactly right Mark. And the key I've found is to let them make mistakes, help them learn from them, & not punish them for these mistakes. Ryan
So true Melissa, especially practicing with visual aids. I have my students practice several times with visual aids, especially if they are technological. I wish I had a dollar for every time...You can fill in the blank. Great reminder. Ryan
Agreed Marva & thank you for the personal example. I think this is a good illustration to always find out about your audience. In this instance you may be told you will be speaking to a "church group" & you think you know what this means. But, by your example, what kind of church group? Thank you. Ryan
Great question. My opinion is that this will be a process over time. On smaller matters/projects I would start employing bottom-up & then slowly graduate to this for all. I have found that people need to be prepared for this transition. While I believe that bottom-up is the best, some groups are not ready for this transition so we need to prepare them. Ryan
Audrey, Absolutely. What I have also found is to inform the audience of why they are there as sometimes, they may not even fully realize why they are there. Sometimes, we are told to go to a meeting & we comply. Ryan
