About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Great personal awareness on your strengths & where you need to pay attention. And you are very right with preparation, nothing can replace this as a tool for feeling confident & giving a good presentation. Ryan

Good point. And I would add that depending upon the experience & abilities of your group, sometimes vague goals can be effective as it allows each group member to form their own personal vision of the goal. Again, this is challenging & should only be done when you have a very capable & experienced group. Ryan
All good techniques to help keep your presentation interesting & effective. Ryan
So true. I have actually made the mistake on both sides & neither is good. I have assumed an audience knew more than they did about my subject & I've assumed they knew nothing. Finding out the experience is a great way to avoid this situation. Ryan

Great point Dwight, you have to see that you can achieve the smaller steps & this will lead to pursuing more challenging goals. Ryan
Good point. I would almost argue that if there are any most important skills, based on your response, they would be adaptability & learning skills. This way the supervisor can continue to thrive & help their team thrive in a constantly changing environment. Ryan
Amani, Great point about building trust. One thing to keep in mind is that while we as leaders may have the best intentions, some of these folks may have been beat up in the past by other managers. We need to recognize that & make sure we are doing all we can to build that trust with them. Ryan
Yes and I would say that, in my opinion, these skills must come in this exact order. A leader must demonstrate willingness to listen & take that criticism & only then can she/he help to bring about positive change. Ryan

Rick, Good point & I also saw your other question regarding a strict line. There is not a strict line but one that you must determine where it should be. I think the key to remember is that coaching is not about being a "buddy" to the employee but being a "friend." I compare it a little bit to parenting. I want to be my children's friend, but I am not their buddy. I'm not the person they hang with, etc. But I'm their friend in that I want what's best for them & sometimes that means giving the unvarnished… >>>
