About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Ronnie, You made several great points in your post, but I particularly appreciate your point about confidence. This is something that I really emphasize to my students & clients as I work with them on presentation skills. Even when we don't feel confident if we can portray confidence we are viewed as better presenters. Ryan

Sherry, Great point about the two not being mutually exclusive & an effective leader encompasses both. However, I will readily admit that I have worked with & for several managers who were not good coaches & who did not coach. To me leadership is the comprehensive umbrella & when we can do both of these we are an effective leader. Ryan

I give you a standing ovation Helena! You make some excellent points. One of my biggest critiques of students & speakers is when they read what's on the power point slides. First of all this is insulting to your audience's intelligence as they can read for themselves. Also, when a speaker does this they tend to put way too much information on the slides as they are using these as they're speaking notes. So this needs to be avoided for many reasons. Also, your suggestion to review recycled presentations is great. I'm all in favor of reusing, but always review… >>>

Melissa, This is a great distinction between the two & also a great application to the classroom. As I've said in other posts, both skill sets are valuable & important, it's just a matter of applying both in the right situations. Ryan

I think you make a great point Henry. And in connection I think it's good to remember that both managing & coaching are important skill sets to have & an effective leader has both. We must develop the awareness & ability to see when each is most appropriate to use. Ryan

Good point regarding showing the mistakes, as long as this is being done in the right way. To show someone their mistakes so they can learn from them is super important. Showing someone their mistakes simply to criticize is super damaging. Ryan
Kathleen, I agree with you regarding the importance of an agenda or following a calendar, etc. Within this I think an important thing to remember is don't let the agenda or calendar override the human factor. We must be sensitive to keeping meetings & being respectful there, however we must also balance our "agenda" with the priority of people. Ryan
This is an excellent definition of coaching & to me the emphasis is upon the idea of a "partnership." It really needs to be treated in this way. Ryan

Great point & it's also important to celebrate the achievement of the smaller goals along the way too.
Great point Felicia. The best course of action, as you say, may need to adapt & change. However the worst course of action is always to stubbornly refuse to adapt & change & try & convince everyone that you are right. We don't know what a project or day may hold, so we must be ready to adapt. Ryan
