About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Trust, honesty & integrity are so very important for a manager/leader. In fact, if they are not present it would be very difficult to utilize the democratic style & have your people engaged as they won't trust you to listen. Ryan
Yes, in fact was just working with some students today on this very point. Never just start or start with a mundane statement (i.e. "okay..." "well, let's get started...") That hook is essential, then we need to make sure we do our best to maintain their attention. Ryan
Faith, Yes, definitely need a written plan. Often people ask me if you really need to write the plan down, to which I respond yes! There is something much more "acountable" when we write it down. Ryan
I would agree that typically bottom-up is better. In addition to the procrastinators, you may have a group of employees who are simply not used to setting goals & so there may need to be a transition period where they are "trained." Obviously moving toward the goal of bottom-up. Ryan
Jack, Great point here. When we have those individuals who are motivated, experienced & capable of this type of bottom-up goal setting we need to try it. However, as you pointed out, before engaging in this we need to do all we can that we can make the connection with the goals of the organization. To fail to do this is, in my opinion, worse than forcing the goals from the top-down. Ryan

Yes and I would emphasize that coaching & managing can & should be found in the same person. Also, sometimes we, as leaders, have to be ready & comfortable switching back & forth between the two fairly regularly. Ryan
Good point Dario. Coaching is definitely helpful in helping another person to reach his/her goals & to listen to them as they are encountering new situations & to learn from these. Ryan
Great points Clifford. One thing I try to do when I encounter behavior from my team that frustrates me is ask: why would this person, who is a rational, intelligent person do this? I've found that helps remind me that they do have these qualities & so I need to dig deeper to find out why they have acted in this manner. Ryan
Scott, All great ideas & key for an effective presentation. Then tying all of this together with a compelling speaking style is very powerful. Ryan

Yes, the important thing to remember here is that when this happens we are not challenging or pushing people, but we are overwhelming them. Stretch goals are a good idea, but we all have our breaking point & need to remember this. Ryan
