About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Love the summation, April!
Yes and sometimes finding out not only how much they know, how they feel, but also how much they care. Your first challenge may be in getting them to care about your topic. Ryan
All great recommendations/suggestions to remember. Your comment about being prepared really hits home. Also, if you are doing a presentation in a different setting (off-site, etc) don't trust "we have Wi-Fi." This lesson has been learned through hard experience. Ryan

Lisa, Tell me more about this idea. I'm curious what you mean by if neither takes advantage of their roles. Ryan
Yes exactly & to echo the idea that it is underused think about this: how many people would ever sign up if we were going to have a workshop on Effective Listening? Hardly any in my opinion! Yet announce a workshop for leaders on effective communication or persuasion & you'll have standing room only. We do not value listening, yet, as you have stated Michael, it is an incredibly vital part of the communication process, especially for leaders. Ryan
Yes, some type of systematic analysis is great. Some brief, informal interviews or even a quick survey for them to complete. Great. Ryan

Yes, when we as a leader can act as that guiding coach, not spoon feeding or telling others how to achieve their goals, but helping them discover the best path, that is very powerful. Ryan
An important point here regarding training & other aspects of personal development. As leaders we need to help our team members find training & developmental activities that are aligned with their goals. True, there may be training that is required for a job, but too often we send people to training for an "event" rather than making sure it aligns with their needs & goals. Ryan
I agree with you the combination can be very powerful. It provides some direction from above, but allows for the participation from below & definitely stimulates discussion. Ryan
I think this is a great plan. I especially like your idea of using top-down with newer employees. Sometimes in our desire to encourage bottom-up, we can actually confuse or frustrate employees if they are not accustomed to this type of goal-setting. Ryan
