About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Deb, All great points. The one that I'll highlight is enthusiasm. I have truly found that when I am excited & passionate about my topic that can make up for many shortcomings. This is not to say that we shouldn't prepare or know our purpose, but you can have these things & still be boring. Ryan

George, I agree with you that by & large coaching is done on an individual basis. Managing is definitely a function that looks at the whole & also can be done with individuals. Ryan

Bruce, Great comments. I think you make a great point here, especially in regard to managing really being more for the organization. Obviously this is important to do & does help everyone's job run more smoothly, but coaching really is the leadership act of supervision. Ryan
Michael, All great points & to me the key in these is your preparation ahead of time. Knowing that you have done your research & you have well prepared your presentation allows you to have that trust in what you're saying as well as to demonstrate confidence & credibility. Ryan

Yasmin, I think you make a great point here & to me the key word is "control." It is very important that we do have the ability & control over achieving our goals because if we don't then they are not really our goals anyway. Ryan
Great post Tina. I particularly appreciate your point regarding the importance of listening for a good coach. Ryan

Great distinction & I agree that in the ideal situation a manager is also a good coach/leader. Ryan
All of these are truly vital skills for any leader. I think it really goes back to the leader's emotional intelligence as you mention here. Ryan
I think you make a great distinction here. It is important to note that there are appropriate times/situations for both top-down & bottom-up goal setting. Neither one is the ultimate solution to all situations. Ryan

I do believe it is because it is easier in the short term. I also believe it's because often leaders are promoted because they are highly skilled individual contributors & it is satisfying to "solve" problems for others. Ryan
