About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Very true that in our culture eye contact demonstrates respect & interest. We do need to be aware of other cultures that we may encounter in the classroom as they may have different norms regarding eye contact. Ryan
Adult learners especially benefit from life experiences. And you are right that they have many of their own experiences that can be shared & that they want to share. Everyone benefits from this arrangement. Ryan
Engaging our students one-one is a great way to make them feel safe & often they will disclose certain facts about themselves, such as a learning disability. Also often the student himself may not know he has a learning disability & by talking with him we can help uncover this. Ryan
I utilize this same idea myself. I move back & forth between the groups. I also try to participate in the discussions & provoke more thought. Often I will try to take an opposing view if I feel the group members are too much in agreement with one another. Ryan
I think the strategy to have the students tell us what has worked for them in the past is a great idea. They know what works best so let's ask them & definitely help them in monitoring their progress. Ryan
I also like to move around to each group & listen for awhile. I find this helps keep them on track & also helps all to contribute more. Ryan
This is an effective, yet relatively easy and inexpensive method to use to reach differently abled learners. When we use a variety of media we can touch on different learning styles & have a better way of teaching. Ryan
Very true. The real life experiences are the relativity factor or "so what" for adult learners. This is very important in their learning. Ryan
Discussion Comment
I have found this to be true as well. And when we can give our students some tools on how to effectively listen to others & respect others' opinions, they have an even greater opportunity for learning. Ryan
All three are very important items needed for effective presentations. And to me, being prepared is what helps me truly be relaxed too. Ryan
