About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Tina, These are all great questions to ask in presentation prep. I especially like your number 4 question. It is vital to consider how you will get buy in from your audience. Ryan
Great Teresa, glad it was helpful! I think we all tend to fall into that same trap. Yet if we continue to look for & incorporate new ways of doing things, we can then have a larger toolbox from which to pull. Ryan
Michael, Thank you for the reply. I've found it helpful to have my courses in mind while I attend the professional conferences. Then I can think about the new information & how I want to deliver it at the same time. Ryan
Tony, Great job of using a wide variety of materials/mediums to help your students learn. I think this also helps show that you don't have to have a huge budget to be able to do these things. Ryan
You bet and I don't think judgmental...you've experienced life! Ryan

Guy, I think you did a great job of capturing the spirit of reasonable goals. The goals must be realistic for me, at this point in time. I may be able to run the NYC Marathon someday, but right now my goal would be to run to the end of the block. Ryan

Yes, the acronym I like to use for a good goal is: SMART. Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timely I've found if goals match these criteria, generally we can be confident they're fairly reasonable goals. Ryan
Yes, too often these students have slipped through the cracks & have never really had anyone help them. Therefore, when they get to us, they don't know what helps them & so we'll need to help them figure that out. Ryan
Reagan, Great point made here. When we are working with students with learning needs, often the more concrete we can be, the better. Ryan
Absolutely! When I was teaching history in the high school I would do this & I was amazed by the number of times my examples came back to me in essay question responses. Ryan
