About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

Beth, A great idea that helps reach a variety of the senses & addresses different learning styles. Ryan
Yes, I've been surprised to realize how many students struggle in this area. Ryan
Good point & I've also found to be careful in balancing quanitative & qualitative peer feedback. When I give a score sheet for peer feedback, I try to show them how severe they might be in their scoring, when they don't mean to be that harsh. Ryan
Beth, You make a great point regarding listening to what is left unsaid. If we are truly listening at the deeper levels, this can often be a great way to discover that there is that disconnect. Ryan
Roy, Great point about helping students see that it's ok to make mistakes. If all we tell are our successes then our students can start to feel as if they are real losers because they could never be that successful. Admit the mistakes, it really does help them learn. Ryan
Roy, All of these are great ideas to be a more effective communicator in the classroom. And the truth is they go hand in hand. It's difficult to be excited in voice or body if I know I'm not prepared as well as I should be. Ryan
I agree, emphasizing diversity in our learning groups is a great way to help with extra learning. Clearly some class demographics make that easier, however we can all find ways to accomplish this. Ryan
Thank you for the recommendation. You are right that we as instructors need to keep ourselves current & well informed in regard to best practices in education. And yes, please revise your course content & keep it fresh! Ryan
Discussion Comment
Yes, we make decisions for the exact immediate moment, rather than taking the time to consider the long-term view. As you said, this usually results in fear-based decision making. Ryan
John, I agree that we need to always analyze the situation & determine which method of goal setting is the most appropriate for the situation. Ryan
